Overview

Betta fish (Betta splendens), also known as Siamese fighting fish, are native to Thailand and Southeast Asia. Males are fiercely territorial and cannot be kept together. They are labyrinth fish, meaning they can breathe air directly at the surface — but they still need clean, well-oxygenated water. Their vibrant fins and interactive personalities make them one of the most rewarding fish to keep.

Tank Setup

  • A 10–20 litre tank is the minimum; larger tanks have more stable water chemistry.
  • A gentle filter is essential — bettas dislike strong currents, so use a sponge filter or baffle a hang-on-back filter.
  • Bettas are tropical fish — a heater is required to maintain 24–28°C.
  • Provide hiding spots with caves, driftwood, and broad-leaf plants (live or silk — avoid sharp plastic).
  • A tight-fitting lid is a must — bettas are skilled jumpers.
  • Floating plants like frogbit give bettas a rest spot near the surface, which they love.

Feeding

  • Feed small amounts twice a day — 2–4 pellets per feeding is usually enough.
  • High-protein betta pellets should be the main diet.
  • Offer variety with frozen or freeze-dried bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp 2–3 times per week.
  • Fast the betta one day per week to prevent constipation.
  • Remove uneaten food after 5 minutes to keep water clean.

Health Tips

  • Never keep two male bettas in the same tank — they will fight to the death.
  • Fin rot is the most common illness; it is caused by poor water quality and stress. Improve conditions and treat with aquarium-safe medication.
  • Bettas can get velvet (gold-dust disease) — treat with copper-based medication and dim the lights.
  • Bloating (dropsy) is serious — quarantine immediately and consult a vet.
  • Do 25–30% water changes weekly. Never use cold tap water directly — always dechlorinate and match the temperature.
  • Males will flare at their own reflection; cover three sides of the tank if the betta seems stressed.
