Overview

Goldfish are one of the oldest and most popular aquarium fish in the world, domesticated in China over 1,000 years ago. Despite their reputation as "easy" fish, they produce significant waste and need a proper filtered tank — not a bowl. With the right setup, goldfish can live for decades and grow surprisingly large.

Tank Setup

  • A single goldfish needs at least 20–30 litres; add 10–15 L per additional fish.
  • Goldfish are cold-water fish — no heater required in most Indian homes, though avoid temperatures above 24°C.
  • A high-quality canister or hang-on-back filter is essential because goldfish produce a lot of ammonia.
  • Use smooth gravel or bare-bottom substrate — goldfish love to sift through gravel and can injure themselves on sharp edges.
  • Live plants such as Anubias and Java Fern are good choices, as most planted varieties will be eaten.
  • Perform 25–30% water changes weekly to maintain water quality.

Feeding

  • Feed two to three small meals per day — only as much as they can consume in 2 minutes.
  • Quality sinking pellets designed for goldfish are the best staple diet.
  • Supplement with blanched peas (remove the skin) to aid digestion and prevent constipation.
  • Occasional treats: bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp.
  • Avoid overfeeding — uneaten food quickly pollutes the water.
  • Soak dried pellets briefly before feeding to prevent swim bladder issues.

Health Tips

  • Ich (white spots) is common — treat with aquarium salt and raise temperature slightly.
  • Fin rot is often caused by poor water quality; improve filtration and do more frequent water changes.
  • Swim bladder issues are common in fancy varieties — fast the fish for 24–48 hours and then feed blanched peas.
  • Quarantine new fish for at least 2 weeks before adding them to an established tank.
  • Never add tap water directly — always dechlorinate with a water conditioner.
