Aquarium Water Parameters Explained: Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, pH
Clear water tells you nothing. Here is what each test result actually means, what the safe range is, and exactly what to do when a reading comes back wrong.
Water testing is the difference between guessing and knowing. Almost every fishkeeping problem, from cloudy water to fin rot to sudden deaths, shows up in a test result days before it shows up in your fish. A liquid master test kit costs โน2,500-โน3,500 in India, lasts two to three years, and is the best value purchase in the hobby.

The Nitrogen Cycle in One Paragraph
Fish excrete ammonia, which is highly toxic. One group of bacteria converts ammonia into nitrite, which is also toxic. A second group converts nitrite into nitrate, which is far less harmful. Nothing in a normal aquarium removes nitrate, so you remove it with water changes. That is the whole system. Ammonia and nitrite should always read zero in an established tank; if either does not, the bacteria colony is either missing or overwhelmed.
Ammonia
Any reading above 0 is a problem. Ammonia burns gill tissue, and the damage is often irreversible even after the water is fixed.

Common causes: a new uncycled tank, too many fish added at once, overfeeding, a dead fish hidden behind decor, filter media washed under a tap, a filter that stopped during a power cut, or an over-enthusiastic gravel clean that stripped the bacteria colony.
๐กAmmonia toxicity rises sharply with pH and temperature. The same 0.5 ppm reading is far more dangerous in hard alkaline water at 30ยฐC than in soft water at 24ยฐC. If your tap water is hard and alkaline, which is common in Chennai, Hyderabad and much of north India, treat any ammonia reading as urgent.
Nitrite
Nitrite blocks the blood from carrying oxygen, so fish suffocate even in well aerated water. Symptoms look identical to low oxygen: gasping, rapid gill movement, lethargy. Any reading above 0 requires immediate water changes. Adding aquarium salt at 1 gram per litre helps protect the gills while the cycle catches up, since chloride competes with nitrite uptake.
Nitrate
The end product of the cycle, and the reason water changes exist. Under 20 ppm is ideal, under 40 ppm is acceptable, and over 80 ppm causes chronic stress, stunted growth, poor colour, and a tank that always has algae.
- Rising nitrate means you are changing too little water, too infrequently, or you are overstocked.
- Nitrate at zero in a stocked tank usually means a test error or a very heavily planted tank.
- Test your tap water too. Some Indian municipal and borewell supplies come out at 20-40 ppm nitrate already, which changes what a water change can achieve.
- Fast growing plants (hornwort, water sprite, floating plants) consume nitrate directly and are the only genuinely passive way to lower it.
pH, GH and KH
The single most important thing about pH is stability. A stable 7.8 is much better for fish than a pH that bounces between 6.5 and 7.5 because someone is dosing chemicals. Farm bred fish in India, which is nearly everything you can buy, are raised in local water and adapt to a wide range.

KH (carbonate hardness) is the buffer that stops pH from moving. If KH is below about 3 dKH, pH can crash overnight, which kills fish faster than a slightly wrong pH ever will. If you have very soft water and an unstable pH, add crushed coral or a small amount of aragonite to the filter to raise KH gently rather than dosing pH chemicals.
โ ๏ธDo not use pH up and pH down products. They move the number without addressing KH, so the pH drifts back and you end up with repeated swings. Swinging pH is far more harmful than a stable value slightly outside the ideal range. Choose fish that suit your water instead.

A practical routine: liquid kit for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate every fortnight and any time something looks wrong; daily ammonia testing during the first six weeks of a new tank or after any disruption. Shake the nitrate bottle hard for 30 seconds before use, or you will get false low readings.
