Ask an aquarium expertTypes of guppy fish
Half black
Dark rear body against a bright tail. A common and well priced strain across Indian breeders.
Full red
Solid red fins and tail. Colour holds best when the line has been kept pure.
Blue grass
Speckled blue tail pattern that reads as a fine mosaic up close.
Albino
Red eyes with a pale body. Slightly more delicate and less tolerant of bright lighting.
Endler hybrid
Smaller and faster than standard guppies, with dense colour on the body rather than the tail.
Why guppies suit Indian tap water
Guppies want hard, mineral rich, slightly alkaline water, which is exactly what comes out of the tap across much of India. That single fact is why they are the most forgiving fish for a first aquarium here, and why keepers who fight to soften their water for other species can keep guppies with no adjustment at all.
Dechlorinate and match the temperature when changing water, and most of the work is done. A cycled tank with a sponge filter and a few plants will hold a colony comfortably.
Very soft water is the one situation where guppies struggle, showing faded colour and weak fry. If your supply is soft, a little crushed coral in the filter raises hardness gently.
Ratios, breeding and what to do with the fry
Keep more females than males, ideally two or three females per male. Males court constantly and a lone female in a group of males is harassed to exhaustion.
Guppies are livebearers and a healthy female produces fry roughly every month, often for several months from a single mating. This happens whether or not you plan for it.
Fry survive best in a planted tank with dense cover, because adults eat them. Decide early whether you want a growing colony or a stable group, and either add floating plants or accept that most fry will not make it.
Tank mates that work
Guppies mix well with platies, mollies, corydoras, small rasboras and peaceful tetras that share their preference for harder water.
Avoid known fin nippers such as tiger barbs and serpae tetras, which target the long tails. Male bettas are a risk for the same reason, since a flowing guppy tail can read as a rival.
Also avoid anything large enough to eat them. Adult angelfish and gouramis will treat a small guppy as food regardless of temperament.
Common problems
Clamped fins and a fish hanging near the surface usually point at water quality or a temperature crash rather than infection. Test first and medicate second.
Long tails are vulnerable to fin rot in dirty water. Regular partial changes prevent almost every case.
Guppies from a heavily inbred line can be fragile no matter how good your water is. Buying from stock that looks robust and active is worth more than any specific strain name.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy guppy fish online in India?
Yes. Available guppies can be ordered online, subject to serviceability and safe live-fish delivery conditions for your pincode.
How many guppies should be kept together?
Start with at least three. A ratio of one male to two or three females reduces stress on female fish.
Are guppies suitable for beginners?
Yes. Guppies are hardy and adaptable, but still need a cycled tank, dechlorinated water and stable temperature.
How many guppies can I keep in a 20 litre tank?
A small group of about five, with more females than males, and only in a cycled and filtered tank. Remember that they breed, so plan for the population to grow.
Do guppies need a heater in India?
Usually not for much of the year, since room temperature suits them. A heater helps in northern winters where the night time drop is large.
Why do my guppies keep dying?
The most common causes are an uncycled tank, a large temperature swing during water changes, and very soft water. Check those three before assuming disease.
Can guppies live alone?
They are social and look better in a group. A single guppy will survive but spends much less time in the open.
