Ask an aquarium expertTypes of flowerhorn fish
Kamfa
Squarer body, sunken red eyes and a wider tail. Head growth develops more slowly but often holds better.
Zhen Zhu
Pearled body with a rounder head. Grows the head hump faster, which makes it a common first flowerhorn.
Golden Monkey
A prized older line, less common and priced accordingly.
Thai Silk
Strong metallic blue or silver across the whole body with reduced patterning.
Super Red Dragon
Heavy red across the head and body. Colour intensity varies between individuals of the same line.
Head growth, and what actually influences it
The head hump, called the kok, is the feature most buyers are paying for. It is driven first by genetics and the specific line, then by sex, since males develop it far more than females, and only then by conditions.
Good water, a protein rich diet and a settled fish all help a fish reach its potential. No food creates a hump in a fish whose genetics do not support one, and claims otherwise should be treated with caution.
Head growth continues to change as the fish matures. A juvenile with a modest kok may develop considerably, which is part of why grown out adults cost more than young fish.
Tank setup for a territorial fish
An adult flowerhorn needs roughly two hundred litres with strong filtration, and length matters because the fish patrols. Filtration is sized for a messy carnivore rather than for the water volume alone.
Keep decor minimal and firmly placed. Flowerhorns rearrange gravel, uproot plants and can dislodge heaters, so equipment should be guarded or placed out of reach.
A heater guard is worth having. Flowerhorns are strong enough to break a glass heater against the tank wall, which is a genuine hazard rather than a theoretical one.
Keeping a flowerhorn alone or with others
The default is one flowerhorn in one tank. They are bred for aggression and most attempts at community housing end with an injured tank mate.
Some keepers run a divided tank so two fish can see each other without contact, which can encourage display behaviour and colour. Use a solid divider rather than a mesh.
If you want tank mates, the tank has to be much larger than the minimum and the companions robust, and you should still expect to separate fish at some point.
Interaction and enrichment
Flowerhorns are unusually responsive fish. They recognise their keeper, follow a hand along the glass and can be taught to react to routine, which is a large part of their appeal.
That intelligence cuts both ways. A bored fish in a bare tank becomes restless and can turn aggression on equipment or itself. Varying feeding times and adding safe objects to investigate helps.
Hand feeding is popular but encourages nipping. Use a feeding stick if you want the interaction without training the fish to strike at hands.

Frequently asked questions
What is the flowerhorn fish price in India?
Price depends on size, body shape, colour, lineage and head development. Current listings show the latest available prices.
Can flowerhorn live with other fish?
Flowerhorn are territorial and are safest in a dedicated aquarium. Tank mates require expert planning and a very large tank.
What tank size does a flowerhorn need?
An adult flowerhorn should have approximately 200 litres or more with strong filtration and swimming space.
Do flowerhorn fish recognise their owner?
They respond strongly to a familiar person, following movement at the glass and reacting to routine. It is one of the reasons keepers describe them as pet like.
Why is my flowerhorn losing colour?
Stress is the usual reason, brought on by poor water, a recent move or a fish it can see and feel threatened by. Colour typically returns once the fish settles.
Can a flowerhorn live with a plecostomus?
Sometimes, in a large tank with a robust pleco, but it is not reliable. Be prepared to separate them and never assume a peaceful start will last.
How big does a flowerhorn get?
Commonly twenty five to thirty five centimetres, which is why a tank of around two hundred litres is the realistic adult requirement.
