Ask an aquarium expertTypes of betta fish
Halfmoon
Tail opens to a full half circle when flaring. The classic show betta and the most photographed.
Plakat
Short finned and much more active. Fins stay in better condition, which makes plakats a practical choice.
Crowntail
Fin rays extend past the webbing to give a spiked edge. Long fins need clean water to avoid fin rot.
Double tail
Tail split into two distinct lobes with a deeper dorsal fin.
Giant betta
Selectively bred for size, noticeably larger than a standard betta and needing more swimming room.
Koi and galaxy
Marbled colour patterns that shift as the fish matures, so no two are identical.
The bowl myth, and what a betta actually needs
Bettas are sold in tiny containers because they survive there briefly, not because they do well there. They breathe air from the surface using a labyrinth organ, which is why they tolerate stagnant water that would kill most fish, and that tolerance is exactly what created the myth.
A single male is comfortable in a small heated, filtered tank of roughly fifteen litres or more. That is still a modest footprint on a desk or shelf, and it is the difference between a fish that lasts a few months and one that lasts a few years.
Use gentle flow. Long finned bettas are poor swimmers against a current, and a filter outlet aimed straight across a small tank will exhaust the fish. Baffle the outflow or choose a sponge filter.
Temperature matters more than most Indian keepers expect
Bettas are tropical and want water in the mid twenties Celsius. Across much of India the daytime room temperature is fine, so the problem is not heat but swing, particularly the drop overnight and during the cooler months in the north.
A fish held at an unstable temperature becomes lethargic, stops eating and becomes prone to fin rot. A small heater with a thermostat removes the variable entirely and costs very little to run.
Keep the tank out of direct sun. A sunlit tank in an Indian summer can climb well past a safe temperature within an afternoon.
Tank mates and the sorority question
Two males will fight until one is badly injured or dead. This is not aggression that settles with time or space in a normal home tank.
A single male can often live with peaceful bottom dwellers such as corydoras or with snails and shrimp, though shrimp are sometimes treated as food. Avoid anything with flowing fins that might be mistaken for a rival, and avoid known fin nippers.
Female sororities are frequently recommended online and frequently fail. They need a large, heavily planted tank, a group big enough to spread aggression and a keeper ready to separate fish at short notice. Treat it as an advanced project, not a beginner one.
Common problems and how to avoid them
Fin rot shows as ragged, receding fin edges and almost always follows poor water quality. Clean water fixes most early cases without medication.
Constipation and bloating are common because bettas are enthusiastic eaters and are routinely overfed. A few pellets a day is enough, and a fasting day each week is a reasonable habit.
A betta resting on a leaf or on the substrate is usually normal behaviour rather than illness. Judge by appetite, colour and fin position instead.

Frequently asked questions
What is the betta fish price in India?
Common varieties start low while show-grade halfmoon, plakat and giant bettas cost more. The listings here always show current KFM prices.
Can two betta fish live together?
Two males will fight and should never share a tank. Females can sometimes be kept in larger, well-planted sorority setups by experienced keepers.
Do betta fish need a filter and heater?
Yes. A gentle filter and a heater holding 24–28°C keep bettas healthy; small unheated bowls shorten their lifespan.
How long do betta fish live?
Two to four years is typical with a heated, filtered tank. Bettas kept in unheated bowls often die within months, which is where the belief that they are short lived comes from.
Do betta fish need a heater in India?
In most of India the room temperature is adequate for much of the year. A heater is worth having for winter and for rooms that cool sharply at night, because stability is what matters.
How often should I feed my betta?
A small amount once or twice a day, only what the fish finishes in a couple of minutes. Overfeeding is far more common than underfeeding.
Why is my betta not flaring or moving much?
Check temperature first, then water quality. A cold betta becomes still and stops eating. If both are correct, a settled betta simply resting is normal.
