Why goldfish need more tank than people expect
Goldfish are sold small and grow large. A fancy variety commonly reaches the size of an adult hand, and single tailed comets outgrow most home aquariums entirely and belong in a pond.
They also produce more waste than almost any other beginner fish of the same size. That combination, large adult size and heavy waste, is why the small bowl fails so reliably.
A realistic starting point is around seventy five litres for the first fancy goldfish, with meaningful extra volume for each additional fish, and filtration rated generously above the tank size.
Temperature and the Indian summer
Goldfish are cool water fish and do not need a heater in India. The genuine risk runs the other way, because sustained high temperatures hold less dissolved oxygen and a goldfish tank in a hot room can leave the fish gasping at the surface.
Keep the tank out of direct sunlight, increase surface agitation in summer, and avoid overstocking, which compounds every oxygen problem.
If fish gather at the surface and gulp in hot weather, treat it as an oxygen problem first. Add aeration and increase circulation before assuming disease.
Feeding and the floating problem
Goldfish are omnivores and do well on a quality sinking pellet supplemented with blanched vegetables such as peas and spinach. Vegetable matter helps digestion considerably.
Fancy varieties with rounded bodies are prone to swim bladder trouble, which shows as a fish floating upside down or struggling to stay down after eating. Dry flake taken at the surface makes it worse because the fish swallows air.
Soaking dry food before feeding, or choosing sinking pellets, prevents most of these episodes. A fasting day and a fed pea often resolve a mild case.
Choosing healthy goldfish
Watch the fish swim before buying. It should hold position without listing to one side or struggling to stay off the surface or the floor.
Check for clamped fins, white spots, red streaks in the fins and any fuzzy patches. On hooded varieties look closely at the head growth, which should be clean rather than discoloured.
Buy fish of similar size and swimming ability. A black moor with poor vision kept alongside fast single tailed goldfish will consistently lose out at feeding time.
