Goldfish Care Guide for India: Tank Size, Diet and Common Problems
Goldfish are the most kept and most mistreated aquarium fish in India. Get the tank size, temperature and feeding right and they live 10 to 20 years.
A well kept goldfish lives 10 to 20 years and grows to the size of your hand. The average goldfish sold in India lives a few months. The gap between those two outcomes comes down to three things: tank size, temperature, and feeding. Everything else is detail.
The Bowl Problem
Goldfish bowls are still sold everywhere in India, and they fail for four reasons at once. There is no filtration, so ammonia accumulates. The narrow opening gives almost no surface area for oxygen exchange. The volume is so small that temperature and chemistry swing wildly through the day. And there is no room for a fish that reaches 15-30 cm.
If you currently have a goldfish in a bowl, the fastest improvements are: change 30% of the water every second day, feed once daily in tiny amounts, keep it out of sunlight, and upgrade to a filtered tank as soon as you can. A basic 2.5 foot tank with an internal filter costs around โน2,500-โน5,000 and it is the difference between a pet that lives months and one that lives a decade.
Correct Tank Size
| Number of goldfish | Fancy varieties (oranda, ryukin, fantail) | Single tail (comet, common, shubunkin) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2.5 ft / 90 L | 4 ft / 200 L or pond |
| 2 | 3 ft / 130 L | Pond |
| 3 | 3.5-4 ft / 180 L | Pond |
| 4-5 | 4 ft / 220 L | Pond |
| 6+ | 5 ft+ or pond | Pond |
๐กComet and common goldfish are pond fish, not tank fish. They reach 25-30 cm and swim fast over long distances. In India they do extremely well in a garden or terrace pond, where they also survive the summer far better than in a small indoor tank.
Water and Temperature
- Temperature: 18-24ยฐC is ideal. Goldfish are coldwater fish and do not need a heater anywhere in India.
- Above 26ยฐC they become stressed; above 30ยฐC is genuinely dangerous. Summer is the hardest season for Indian goldfish keepers.
- pH: 7.0-8.4. Hard Indian tap water suits goldfish very well.
- Ammonia and nitrite: 0. Nitrate under 40 ppm.
- Filtration: rate the filter at 8-10 times tank volume per hour. Goldfish produce far more waste than tropical fish of the same size.
- Aeration: run an air stone, particularly in summer. Goldfish have a high oxygen demand.
- Water changes: 30% weekly minimum, twice weekly if stocking is on the heavier side.
Keeping goldfish cool in Indian summer
- Move the tank to the coolest interior room, never a balcony or a west facing window.
- Switch the aquarium light off during the day.
- Run a clip fan across the water surface: this drops temperature 2-4ยฐC by evaporation.
- Float a sealed frozen water bottle during peak afternoon heat, but never drop more than 2ยฐC in an hour.
- Increase aeration; warm water holds less oxygen and goldfish need a lot.
- Feed less on very hot days. Digestion consumes oxygen.
Feeding
Goldfish have no stomach, so they process food continuously and will eat until something goes wrong. Overfeeding is behind most goldfish deaths that are not caused by tank size.
| Food | How often | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sinking goldfish pellets | Daily staple | Sinking, not floating: floating food makes fancies gulp air |
| Goldfish flakes | Alternate days | Soak briefly before feeding so they do not expand inside the fish |
| Deshelled boiled peas | 2-3 times a week | The single best preventative for constipation and swim bladder issues |
| Blanched spinach, lettuce, courgette | Twice a week | Goldfish are largely herbivorous and need plant matter |
| Frozen bloodworm or brine shrimp | Once a week | Treat only; too much causes bloating |
| Fasting | One day a week | Genuinely good for their digestion |
Feed twice a day, only what is eaten in 60-90 seconds, and net out anything left. If your goldfish looks like a balloon or floats after eating, you are feeding too much or feeding floating food.
Common Goldfish Problems
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Floating upside down or sinking after eating | Swim bladder disorder, usually from gulping air or constipation | Fast 2-3 days, then feed deshelled boiled peas, switch to sinking food, raise temperature slightly |
| Red streaks in fins or on the body | Ammonia poisoning | Test water, 30-50% water change immediately, then daily until 0 |
| White salt-like spots | Ich, usually after a temperature swing | Raise temperature to 26-28ยฐC slowly, add aquarium salt or an ich treatment for 7-10 days |
| Fins ragged and receding | Fin rot from poor water quality | Water changes plus an antibacterial; fix the water first |
| Scales sticking out like a pinecone | Dropsy, internal organ failure | Poor prognosis; isolate, epsom salt bath, review water quality |
| Black patches on body | Often ammonia burn healing | Good sign if water is now clean; keep parameters at zero |
| Gasping at the surface | Low oxygen or high ammonia | Aeration immediately, test water, water change |
| Sitting at the bottom, clamped fins | Cold shock, poor water, or illness | Test water first, check temperature stability |
Tank Mates
Goldfish are best kept with other goldfish. They need cooler water than tropical fish, they are messy, and slow fancy varieties get outcompeted for food. Do not mix fancy goldfish with fast single tail varieties: the comets will eat everything first. Weather loaches, hillstream loaches and white cloud mountain minnows are among the few genuinely compatible tank mates because they share the coldwater requirement. Never keep goldfish with tropical fish, bettas, or a Chinese algae eater (which latches onto their flanks).
Setup Checklist
- 2.5 ft tank minimum for one fancy goldfish, 3 ft for two.
- Filter rated 8-10x tank volume, plus an air pump and air stone.
- No heater needed. A digital thermometer is essential in summer.
- Smooth gravel or bare bottom. Goldfish swallow small gravel and choke.
- No sharp decor: fancy goldfish have delicate eyes and trailing fins.
- Tough plants only (anubias, java fern) or none at all.
- Sinking pellets, plus peas and greens.
- Weekly 30% water change with a dechlorinator.
