Pigeon blood
Pale body with red patterning. One of the most widely available strains in India and a common starting point.
Blue diamond
Solid blue with no barring. Solid colour strains show blemishes more obviously, so buy from clean stock.
Red turquoise
Heavy red and turquoise striping across the body. Colour deepens with age and a good diet.
Snow white
Very pale, almost unmarked. Water quality shows immediately on white strains, so they suit keepers with a settled tank.

Why discus need a mature tank
Discus are less forgiving than most aquarium fish, and almost every failure traces back to water rather than food or disease. They want warmth in the high twenties Celsius, clean water with very low nitrate, and above all stability.
Cycle the aquarium fully and run it for several weeks before the fish arrive. A tank that is still establishing will swing in ways discus respond to badly, and a stressed discus stops eating and darkens within hours.
Large, frequent water changes are the standard approach. Many successful Indian keepers change a substantial share of the volume several times a week, matching temperature carefully so the change itself is not a shock.
Keeping discus in a group
Discus are shoaling fish with a visible pecking order. A single discus is usually a nervous discus. Six or more lets aggression spread out instead of falling on one individual.
Buy a group of similar size. A much smaller fish in a group of larger ones will be outcompeted at feeding time and will fall behind permanently.
A taller tank suits their body shape. Height gives them room to sit calmly, and a quiet location away from a busy doorway makes a noticeable difference to how confidently they feed.
Feeding for colour and growth
A varied diet built on quality granules, frozen bloodworm and a beef heart style mix produces the best growth. Young discus are fed several small meals a day, which is a large part of why they grow well in dedicated grow-out tanks.
Frequent feeding means frequent waste. The feeding schedule and the water change schedule are the same decision, and keepers who increase one without the other run into trouble.
Colour is partly genetic and partly diet. No food turns a plain fish into a show fish, but poor feeding will certainly dull a good one.
Choosing healthy discus
A healthy discus is round, alert and actively interested in food. Watch for a fish that is eating rather than one that is merely swimming.
Warning signs are a darkened body, clamped fins, hiding in a corner, rapid gill movement, and eyes that look large relative to a thin body, which suggests it has been underfed during growth.
Ask how long the stock has been at the shop. Discus that have settled for a couple of weeks after import travel far better than fish moved on immediately.
