Flowerhorn Fish Price in India 2026 - Kok Grades, SRD & Kamfa

Flowerhorn prices in India explained: why one fish costs ₹300 and another ₹25,000, and how to judge kok, colour, and strain before you pay.

No aquarium fish in India has a wider price spread than the flowerhorn. A juvenile from a local spawn costs ₹300, while an imported show-grade kamfa with a massive kok (head growth) can cross ₹25,000. The difference is entirely about genetics and grade, and because flowerhorns are hybrids, quality varies hugely between spawns. This guide explains exactly what you are paying for at each price level.

What Decides Flowerhorn Price?

The Kok (Head Growth)

The kok is the single biggest price factor. A large, round, water-type kok can multiply a fish's value five-fold. Juveniles are cheap precisely because kok development is a gamble: even in a good spawn, only a small fraction develop show-quality heads. Buying a graded 4-inch fish with a visible kok nub costs more upfront but removes most of the risk.

Strain: SRD vs Kamfa

SRD (Super Red Dragon) dominates the Indian market: intense red body, strong pearling, and reliable kok genetics. Kamfa is the premium strain, identified by a square body, wrapped fan tail, sunken white or yellow eyes, and a harder kok. Genuine kamfa is rarer in India and mostly imported, which is why it costs 2-3x an equivalent SRD.

Colour, Pearling and Flowerline

Judges and buyers look at the flowerline (the black markings along the flank), pearl coverage, and colour intensity. A clean unbroken flowerline with dense pearling lifts a fish into the next price bracket even with an average kok.

Flowerhorn Care Cost Basics

  • Tank: minimum 55 gallon (210 litres) for one adult; flowerhorns are kept alone, one fish per tank
  • Filtration: heavy; a canister or large hang-on filter (₹1,500-5,000) since they eat and waste a lot
  • Temperature: 26-30°C; a 100-200 watt heater for winter
  • Food: quality kok-boosting pellets (₹300-700 per month); avoid feeding live feeder fish daily, it risks disease
  • Water changes: 30% weekly minimum; clean water is the cheapest kok booster there is
  • Monthly running cost: roughly ₹500-1,000 including food, electricity, and conditioner

Where to Buy Flowerhorn in India

Kolathur Fish Market in Chennai is India's flowerhorn capital: local breeders produce thousands of SRD juveniles monthly, and importers bring in graded kamfa and show fish from Thailand and Vietnam. KFM ships flowerhorns pan-India in insulated, oxygen-packed boxes, with photos of the exact fish before dispatch.

⚠️Buying tip: Never pay show-grade prices for a juvenile based on the seller's promise of future kok. Pay juvenile prices for juveniles. If a seller claims a 2-inch fish is guaranteed to develop a big kok, walk away; nobody can guarantee that.
