Length is the requirement people underestimate. An adult silver arowana reaches roughly the length of your forearm and elbow combined, and it swims in straight lines just under the surface. A tank of about six feet by two feet by two feet is a realistic adult home, and juveniles can start smaller only if you have a firm plan to upgrade.

A tight, weighted lid is not optional. Arowana are powerful jumpers and the most common cause of death in home aquariums is the fish leaving the tank overnight. Cover every opening, including the gaps around filter pipes.

Keeping two arowana together is difficult and usually ends in injury unless the system is very large and heavily stocked to spread aggression.

Look at the fish swimming before you commit. Both barbels should be intact and pointing forward, the eyes should sit level, the gill covers should lie flat rather than curling outward, and the fish should hold position calmly rather than crashing at the glass.

Ask about the source and, for any protected species, ask to see documentation. A seller who cannot produce paperwork for a species that requires it is a seller to walk away from.
