Types of platy fish

Mickey Mouse platy

Named for the three spot marking at the tail base. The most widely available variety.

Sunset platy

Orange to red gradient running along the body.

Wagtail platy

Solid body colour with contrasting black fins and tail.

Blue platy

Cool steel blue tone that stands out against a dark substrate.

Variatus platy

Slightly larger and more elongated, tolerating cooler water than the common platy.

The most forgiving fish on this list

Platies tolerate a wider range of conditions than almost any other popular aquarium fish. They accept hard Indian tap water, a broad temperature band and the small mistakes every new keeper makes.

That tolerance is why they are the best first fish for anyone unsure about their water. A cycled, filtered tank of about forty litres holds a small group comfortably.

They are also inexpensive and widely bred locally, so replacing or adding to a group is straightforward.

Breeding happens whether you plan it or not

Platies are livebearers and females store sperm, which means a female bought from a shop is very often already pregnant and will keep producing fry for months.

Fry appear roughly monthly. In a bare tank most are eaten by the adults, and in a planted tank a good number survive, so the tank layout effectively decides your population.

If you do not want a growing colony, keep only males. An all male group stays colourful and avoids the harassment that comes with a poor sex ratio.

Feeding and colour

Platies are omnivores that graze all day. A quality flake or micro pellet with vegetable content suits them, supplemented with blanched vegetables or an algae wafer.

Colour deepens with a varied diet and good water. A dark substrate and some planting also make the colours read more strongly.

They are enthusiastic eaters and easy to overfeed. Small amounts once or twice a day is plenty.

Tank mates

Platies suit almost any peaceful community. Guppies, mollies, corydoras, small rasboras and peaceful tetras all work well.

They share the preference for harder water with guppies and mollies, which makes those three a natural community for Indian tap water.

Avoid large cichlids and anything that will treat a five centimetre fish as food.

Frequently asked questions

What is the platy fish price in India?

Platies are among the most affordable aquarium fish and are usually bought in small groups. Current prices are shown in the listings.

Do platies breed easily?

Yes. Platies are livebearers and healthy females drop fry every few weeks; expect population growth in a well-planted tank.

Are platies good community fish?

Yes. They are peaceful and mix well with guppies, mollies, tetras and other small community species.

Are platies good for beginners?

They are among the best. Platies tolerate hard water, a wide temperature range and minor mistakes better than most popular aquarium fish.

How do I stop my platies from breeding?

Keep only males. Females often arrive already pregnant and can produce fry for months from a single mating, so separating sexes later does not stop it quickly.

Do platies need a heater?

In most of India room temperature is fine. A heater is useful where night time temperatures drop sharply, since stability matters more than the exact figure.

How many platies should I keep?

A group of at least four or five. If you keep both sexes, use two or three females for each male so no female is constantly pursued.
