Tank height matters more than length

Angelfish are tall rather than long, and that shape drives the tank choice. A short tank forces an adult to swim awkwardly no matter how much floor space it has.

Aim for a tank around forty five centimetres tall or more for adults, with a hundred litres as a reasonable volume for a pair or small group.

Tall plants and driftwood suit them, both because they mimic the vertical structure of their natural habitat and because they give a shy fish something to feel secure against.

Buying a group so pairs form naturally

Angelfish cannot be reliably sexed as juveniles, so the standard approach is to buy four to six young fish and let pairs form on their own.
